THE GREEN TEAPOT CAFE, Urbana, IL
The first in a series of posts highlighting the real places which make an appearance in Love and Conductivity.


This little-remembered cafe existed on the 600 E block of Green street from 1919 until about 1928. At the time, there were few cafes and restaurants serving the University population, and by all accounts the Green Teapot was a bustling establishment, often the site of faculty and organizational gatherings.
In the novel, The Green Teapot cafe serves as the setting for a Chemistry department meeting, during which my protagonist Erwin Phipps learns of a striking new development in atomic science, one which sparks his imagination and leads toward a very consequential decision…
